How to refill a gas can from a large propane tank
Portable burners and camping stoves operate from a small disposable gas cylinder, which is clearly overpriced compared to the prices of propane at regular gas stations. In this regard, you can save a lot by refilling such cans from a large propane cylinder through a homemade adapter.
A special nut with a left-hand thread with a fitting for a thin hose is installed on the propane cylinder. This part can be purchased at a hardware store or turned on a lathe.
Next, a short hose with a part from a gas burner without electric ignition attached to the second end is installed on the fitting.
From it only a collet connection is used to fix the can, a faucet and part of the gas pipeline tube. The nozzle itself is cut off. Clamps must be placed on the hose.
To refill the canister, you must first completely release the remaining gas mixture from it.
To do this, just press its fitting with a screwdriver. In this case, you need to stop in time as soon as the gas stops coming out, so that air does not get inside.
Then a large propane cylinder, preferably previously heated in the sun to increase pressure, is placed lying down. In this position, propane will be supplied through the adapter in a liquid rather than gaseous state.
Before refueling, you need to weigh the empty can and see on it what weight of gas it is designed for. This will allow you to control the filling so as not to overfill it with propane. Typically the can holds 220 grams. gas Its final weight after refueling should be equal to the sum of the actual empty weight plus 220 g. propane.
On a large cylinder with an adapter installed, the valve opens. Next, you need to open the tap on the sawn burner for a second to remove air from the system. After this, a spray can is installed on the adapter, and its valve opens completely.
When refilling, it is better to turn the canister upside down, in which case the gas inside it will evaporate less and more of it will fit. When you feel that the cylinder has become heavy, you need to stop, disconnect it and weigh it. Based on the mass, you can understand whether it is filled to the required maximum or not yet.
If the can is not full, it should be cooled. In this case, the propane inside will become liquid and will take up less space, which will allow you to pump more. To do this, you can put the can in the refrigerator or simply press down its fitting to release some gas. When it comes out, it will cool the canister, and the propane remaining inside will become liquid.
