How to make a high-quality awl from trash
When working in the workshop, and around the house, you often need an awl. This is a useful, indispensable tool that is inexpensive. But in fact, it’s faster and easier to make than going to the store and buying.
Materials:
- rail;
- long wood screw;
- empty air gun cans;
- broken file.
The process of making an awl from a self-tapping screw
The self-tapping screw for the awl needs to be checked for flexibility.
If it bends, it needs to be hardened. He simply warms up until red hot and plunges into the water.
A hardened self-tapping screw needs to be screwed into a 7-10 cm long piece of strip. To prevent it from splitting, it is better to drill first.
Next, the head of the screw is cut off.
After this, you need to sharpen the rail, giving it the shape of a handle.
You can clamp the screw into a drill and sharpen it with a grinder. This way everything will turn out symmetrical.
After this, the tip of the awl is sharpened.
You can also cut the neck off the carbon dioxide cylinder and place it on an awl.
You will get an even cut if you rotate it in the drill chuck. If desired, you can also grind the relief on the handle so that it does not slip.
An awl made from a needle file and a can of carbon dioxide
You need to drill out the neck of the can, and drill its bottom exactly opposite.
Then a needle file is inserted into it.
If you have epoxy, then just pour it into the container through the hole in the bottom, and after it dries, sharpen the awl. You can also weld a thick nail or self-tapping screw to the needle file.
Then, at the exit of the extended half from the cylinder, a drop of welding is required on its end.
