How to Convert a 12V Lead Acid Battery to a Lithium-Ion Battery
Lead-acid batteries are not as capacious and durable as we would like. One of the advantages of their use in motorcycles is their operation at low temperatures. But usually scooters and mopeds, where such batteries are used in the winter and are not used. Therefore, if your acid battery fails, it can easily be converted to a high-capacity lithium-ion battery.
Will need
- 4 Batteries 3.7 V 26650 series -
- Balanced charge controller 4S - http://alii.pub/5mubpk
- Copper stranded wire with a cross section of 6-10 square meters. mm.
- Tubular solder with rosin.
Converting an acid battery into a lithium-ion battery with your own hands
Open the top battery cover using a screwdriver.
We remove all gas outlet caps. The body is usually welded from two plastic halves. We cut the battery along the seam with a hacksaw.
Next, very carefully, without touching with your hands and wearing safety glasses, remove all contents from the sections.
We dispose of them appropriately. Wash the body with detergent. Let's cut off all the partitions except the last one. It will house the charging controller. It is very convenient that the batteries will be separated from the electronics by a partition.
We place 4 batteries, checking how they fit in place.
In order for everything to fit in, I had to cut a groove in the lid. It will still be closed with a plug.
We take a 30A charging controller for 4 batteries.
It will completely control not only the charging of each battery, but also the discharge. The connection diagram is as follows:
We connect the batteries in series.
Common terminal on thick wires.
We make taps from each battery connection and solder them to the controller.
We solder the pins from the controller.
We install the batteries into the case. The controller is placed in a separate compartment. Solder the wires to the battery terminals.
Close the lid and secure it with superglue.
We put the plug in its place.
We check the output voltage - 12.8 V.
Charge to full capacity.
We install it on the scooter.
Everything works great.
The engine starts, all electronics are in order.
The battery capacity before the modification was 4 A/h. Now, when using lithium batteries, the capacity has increased to 5 A/h.
