How to make a clamp for quick assembly of baguette frames driven by a screwdriver

To connect picture frames with staples, or to glue them together more conveniently, you can use a special clamp. It evenly crimps baguettes cut at an angle of 45 degrees. As a result, they fit together smoothly and without gaps in a couple of seconds. So if you make such frames often, then this clamp will save you a lot of time.

Materials:

  • Plywood 10 mm;
  • wood glue;
  • M8 pin;
  • thin tube
  • furniture ties – 8 pcs.;
  • countersunk furniture nut M8;
  • M8 nuts – 6 pcs.;
  • dowels – 8 pcs.

Frame clamp manufacturing process

From plywood you need to make three-layer strips 40 mm wide to assemble the clamp frame with a hinged joint. The first 2 blanks are glued with two inserts in the central layer. The length of the outer slats should be 170 mm, and the two inserts should be 40 mm each. Thus, the latter are placed so as to form 40 mm grooves along the edges and leave a 10 mm gap between them.

Also, 4 three-layer parts from blanks 210 mm long are glued together. The lamella of the central layer must be extended by 40 mm when gluing.Thus, the finished planks will have a length of 250 mm, taking into account the formed tenon on the edge.

The tenons of the long parts need to be mated with the grooves of the short ones. Now you need to make the hinge joints. To do this, 4 bushings of 25 mm each are cut from a thin tube. Next, the plywood blanks are drilled for the bushings. The corners of all parts are cut so that the hinges can rotate normally.

One short strip needs to be drilled in the center for a countersunk M8 nut. It is placed inside and a pin is screwed into it. The free end of the latter is inserted into the second bar. That, in turn, needs to be tightened so that the pin is not removed, but rotates freely.

Long slats are installed on short slats using bushings and ties. It is important here that the heads of the ties do not protrude outward.

On the grooves of the long planks, in the same way, you need to attach support pads to the bushings, also three-layer glued from plywood. The latter will need to be drilled to insert the dowels.

To use the clamp, you need to cut the baguettes at 45 degrees.

They are laid out on the device with emphasis on the dowels. After this, you need to rotate the pin with a screwdriver and tighten the parts into the frame. Then it is glued or knocked together with staples and nails. Everything is very simple and fast. Using this principle, you can make a clamp of a small size, for example, for an A5 frame.
