How to make an antenna for a WiFi adapter and increase the reception range many times over

It’s just that a regular Chinese Wi-Fi USB adapter cannot catch a signal, say, from a neighboring house. To significantly increase the reception range, you can make an additional antenna for the adapter from scrap materials and increase the range of the Wi-Fi signal many times over.

You will need:

  • Chinese USB WiFi adapter - http://alii.pub/65d0bm
  • Copper wire with a cross section of 1.5 mm.
  • Case from an old DVD or similar sheet of metal 12x8 cm.
  • Thin coaxial cable.

Manufacturing process

Carefully unclip the fasteners on each side of the case and disassemble the USB adapter.

To make a long-range antenna we use copper wire. First, we level it and use a marker to mark 8 segments of 3 cm each on it.

Now, following the marks, bend the wire using pliers, as shown in the photo below.

It is important that all angles are right. You can check this by placing the bend on the corner of the ruler.

We bend the base in the opposite direction, as shown in the photo - this will be the stand for our antenna.Additionally, we align the folds with pliers so that everything is perfectly straight.

Now we need to make a reflector for our antenna. To do this, mark a rectangle of approximately 12x8 cm on the case from an old DVD with a marker, and in the center of the rectangle we mark two holes for mounting and wires.

Using metal scissors, cut out this rectangle and drill holes.

Use a soldering iron to tin and solder the ends of the circuit.

Our antenna is ready, now we need to solder it to the reflector. To do this, carefully clean the soldering area with sandpaper.

Apply a little soldering acid to the soldering area. Mark 1.5 cm from the beginning of the antenna post.

We properly tin the mounting location and the stand itself.

Now we thread it through the hole and solder it well at the mark. The protruding part of the stand can be cut off with pliers.

We pass the coaxial cable into the second hole and solder one core to the stand, the other to the end of the circuit. We solder the wires at the other end to the wire of the existing antenna.

Use a soldering iron to make a hole in the body of the USB adapter for the wire of an additional antenna. Remove excess plastic with a knife.

Now we can assemble our device: insert the original antenna into the case, place the control board and the additional antenna wire, snap the fasteners and return the USB cap to its place.

We check that the strength of the Wi-Fi signal has increased significantly, now you can connect to a network that the computer had not even seen before.
