How to make a lock with an automatic latch for a gate
To ensure that the gate is blocked when closing, you can put a very simple, reliable homemade lock on it. It, unlike store-bought ones, works flawlessly and can withstand heavy loads, including mechanical stress. Making such a lock if you have a welding inverter will not be particularly difficult.
Materials for making the latch:
- corner 50x30 or 50x50 mm;
- strip 30 mm;
- M10 bolts – 2 pcs.
The process of making a lock with a latch with your own hands
It is necessary to cut a piece 30 mm wide from the corner.
A strip is welded to it with a gap. The distance between them should be 2 mm greater than the thickness of the strip.
2 holes are drilled in the welded workpiece.
Before the first one, you need to make a cutout and grind off the formed corners.
A strip is inserted into the gap of the welded part and drilled to connect to it with a bolt.
Opposite the cutout, it needs to be sharpened into a hook. It is important that its nose is beveled and has rounded corners.
A small plate is welded onto the top of the hook. The heel will make it heavier, which will improve the snap.You can also grab it to open the lock.
The mating part of the lock is made from a similar trimmed corner. A hole is drilled in it opposite the cavity under the hook. A bolt is inserted into it and welded. The bolt that holds the hook should be cut and welded.
Thus, the lock is screwed to the post, and the counterpart to the gate, or vice versa, depending on the direction of its opening. When closed, the pin will be locked in the lock behind the hook. To open the gate, you just need to lift the hook by hooking it with your fingers on the heel.
