How to mark a pipe for precise cutting for welding a 90 degree elbow
In the absence of a miter saw for metal, cutting a pipe at 45° in order to weld a 90° elbow from it is very problematic. If you do this with a grinder, then very precise markings are required. You can do it using a regular sheet of paper.
What you will need:
- A4 paper;
- pencil;
- ruler;
- scissors.
The process of marking and cutting pipes
The pipe must be wrapped in a sheet of paper, its edges drawn together and the excess cut off. As a result, there should be a trim that envelops the tube with an even joint along the transverse line.
Next, the diameter of the pipe is measured.
In this case it turns out to be 60 mm. The prepared sheet is folded in half, and a transverse line is drawn on it at a distance from the edge equal to the diameter of the pipe, that is, 60 mm.
The marked area is divided into 3 parts by two longitudinal lines. They are indented from the sides by the distance of the radius of the pipe, that is, 30 mm.
Next, you need to fit a semicircle into the side rectangles; to do this, attach the end of the pipe to them and outline it. Then you need to draw an oblique line under the ruler, as in the photo.
Now all that remains is to cut the corner of the marking along the line and outline of the circles.
As a result, we get a template. It needs to be wrapped around the pipe and circled. If you then cut it along this line, then by joining the edges of the blanks, we will get an ideal 90° elbow.
We cut along the line with a grinder.
We grind the end.
The result is a perfect right angle.
